first off, loved your gameplan seminar - solid stuff and your teaching style “spoke to me.” inspired by late night viewing of the pan ams and adcc, i had a few quick ?’s 1. what’s up with galvao? is he your kryptonite or is it a matter of time before you figure him out? 2. re: adcc and your matches with renzo, saulo, and marcelo (just need to use their first names - that’s how big these matches were) - how nervous were you? - how much was gameplan vs. flow-with-the-go? - at what point did it stop being like, “damn, this is renzo, saulo, and marcelo i’m rolling with!” - marcelo - how good is he? best ever? (btw, you looked awesome against him (nice looking out for his north-south choke). you two actually had a grappling/no-match. he rolled through everyone else - popovitch had nothing for him.)
so my reply….

Whats up with Galvao…hmm. That boys good! First time we fought i was so awe struck by him, i was lost mentally even before the match. 2nd time we fought was ADCC. I felt way better, and I think the shock was gone. However the shock of being in a medal round at ADCC on 2 days notice did not. I did great against him that time I beleive. It was a fun back and forth match. I was really excited hen I almost had that triangle in the beginning…but he is a awesome player. I cant say what the next match will hold, but I can tell you that the Mike Fowler you saw at PacSub Hawaii, is the Mike Fowler you will see from now on.
How nervous wsa I? Words cant explain. Imagine 2 days notice from guam. Leave Friday, arrive NY on friday. Weigh in, and see the bracket for tomorrow. First round Renzo. 2nd rd., Saulo, 3rd rd. Marcelo. So yeah nervous is the correct word. But it was all gameplan. Even in the bad situations. With Renzo, it never stopped being Renzo, I just pushed myself so hard, because i know its Renzo. If i slack the slightest he is gonna capitalize. With Saulo on my back with the mata leao for the first half was rough. But i stuck to my defense and it worked. I was more nervous after tapping him than before the match. I was shaking….i just went to Master Lloyd, and then right back to Saulo. I couldnt believe it.
With Marcelo, one of the best i rolled with? Definitely. But, Marcelo feels different. Different way of playing that he has that no one else is really doing. And thanks for noticing the defenses!! I actually hit my sweep in the match at ADCC. But then i was scared he was gonna get my back!
Sorry for the late reply!
Good Training,
Mike Fowler
