3-0… Back to the drawing board….
Daisuke “Amazon” Sugie defeated Mike Fowler 2-0 to highlight the 3rd Marianas Open Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Submission Grappling Tournament yesterday at the Father Duenas Phoenix Center.
It was the third time the two black belts have met each other, with Daisuke winning all three by decision.
“Last year I was a weight class lower, but this time we were even,” Daisuke said through event coordinator Tony Bashaw.
Daisuke executed a seionage (over-the-shoulder throw) early to score the only points of the match.
“We were just gripping and he hit me with a throw,” said Fowler, head instructor of Purebred Jiu Jitsu Guam. “I landed on my feet but he still got the points.”
Fowler tried to pass Daisuke’s guard late in the match but ran out of time.
“It was a better match than last time,” said Fowler, who next competes in Japan.
As for Daisuke, he will next compete in the All-Japan Championships. Mixed Martial Arts fans may see Daisuke return to the sport, but it all hinges on his performance at the World Jiu Jitsu Championships (commonly called the Mundials).
“I’ll consider it if I win,” he said. www.GuamPDN.com
